Last Update: 14/04/2005
Yes, yes I am alive, first up apologies to those who have recently been unable to contact me I made a slight misconfiguration and thus was not receiving it. Next as to when updats will be coming along - the jDUI is unlikely to be updated as Dani wants to put the juicy bits into his jDRP and since Skyjake appears keen on this I'm ok with that. The jHUI wasn't really as well recieved as I'd hoped it was to have been a process of improvemnt much like the jDUI was but I think I probably let this one *ahem* slide for a while. The jDEP may get an update I've being playing with more advanced and funky skyboxes for a while but unless I do a full new set it doesn't really seem worth it. a more likely update is the release of the higher resolution textures fro the jDEP (all textures in the jDEP were downsampled fro speed and download size). Apart from that I'm as alway really busy and haven't been able to take holiday really since starting work last year so hopefully one day I'll get some holiday and you'll get some content :) View Older NewsAbout this page
This page is mainly to do with Doom and it's derivatives Heretic and Hexen, or more accurately a sourceport called Doomsday that updates those old games with a new graphics and sound engine (plus some other enhancements under the hood). The games jDoom, jHeretic and jHexen (and some others) use the Doomsday engine to ensure.

Doomsday jPacks
You might be wondering what jPacks actually are; basically the Doomsday engine is a sourceport that in combination with a (supplied) game DLL can play Doom style games (i.e. Doom, Heretic, Hexen). The Doomsday Engine itself is highly extensible allowing for game components to be replaced with new up-to-date ones (such as high resolution textures, 3D models, new interface graphics, sounds and music). To package these files in an easily distributable/manageable format Doomsday uses the Pak 3 format (as used by Quake 3).
Pak 3 or PK3 files are effectively uncompressed ZIP files (it is possible to open/edit/save them with zip archive programs such as Winzip - in fact Doomsday will open and use an uncompressed zip in the same way as a pk3 which is why some authors name there files pk3.zip to reflect the fact they don't need to be extracted but can be opened and edited). It has been traditional has been to add a small j (standing for Jaakko Keränen the engine's author) before files for use with Doomsday (hence jDoom, jHeretic, jHexen) thus most major packs are termed as jPacks.

Doomsday Guide
The Doomsday Guide on Doomsday HQ
The Doomsday Guide or simply: is now located on Doomsday HQ, although the download section on Slidespace still has a online and offline (i.e. for download) version of the guide as well as the original Word file. What follows is a brief summary of the history of the guide.
Because the Doomsday Engine and the games that use it are attracting lots of new members there was a tendency to get a lot of repetition in questions. To help alleviate this I’ve put together a Guide that puts much of the documentation that is available (from Doomsday HQ, the Docs files that come with the engine and jDoom, jHeretic & jHexen games and other topics from the forums) in one place.
Note: Remember this is mostly Skyjake’s and a few others work (i.e. not mine) I just put it together formatted it and added some newer issues not currently covered in the docs. I know it doesn't’t cover everything but like I say if there is interest in this I (or others) can update it. As always your primary source of information should be Doomsday HQ and the Docs folder in your Doomsday installation directory – this is where the majority of the contents of this guide is from anyway.
The current version includes a new section on networking as well as new guides on adding your own graphics to Doomsday Games.

jDEP - jDoom Environment Pack: Current Version 2.03
The jDoom Environment Pack (jDEP) is an addon for jDoom that provides settings for fog and Sky boxes for levels. Each sky box consists of a cube that encompasses the entire level, with a texture on each of its (six) surfaces if these textures are made correctly a pretty good illusion of an 360 panoramic environment can be achieved, it is an effect that has been in use in most first person shooters since Quake days.
Currently the jDEP is available in the following forms: the original core jDoom Environment Pack (for Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom) and a extension pack that covers the Final Doom levels (Plutonia Experiment and Evilution) they both contain sky boxes and fog settings for their specific Doom levels. Another low res edition of the pack contains the same features but reduces the resolution of the sky box textures to 256 - which should allow them to be used on even low end machines - this is currently unavailable. If the fog settings are not to your taste you can disable them with the the No Fog Patch also available from the downloads section.
Install Instructions
Download the jDEP installer (go to the downloads section) and run it; this will bring up a dialog box with the option to install the pack to c:\Doomsday. Modify this default path to the actual path of your Doomsday install folder (unless the default is correct.
If after installation the pack doesn't seem to work try downloading the jDEP DED file and placing it within the defs\jdoom\auto within your doomsday installation folder.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Please ensure you have the latest version of both the Doomsday Engine and the jDEP before asking for assistance - this jPack has been throughly tested and should not cause and problems, of course I cannot be held liable for any damage you manage to do to yourself and your machine with this pack.
The current release of the jDEP features:
- The fog used by this pack is by me (Slide) except for Doom 2 and Evilution which were primarily done by Technomancer.
- If you don't like fog an update will be available soon to turn it off
- After installation, you do NOT have to extract or rename the resultant pk3.zip file it will be picked up and used as it is ; renaming and extracting will make no difference.

It also supports the following colour depths 4, 8 and 24-bit (with an alpha channel). The Icon styling is very similar to the original icon but of course now it resizes properly.
